Пословица the proof of the pudding (is in the eating) существует как минимум с 14 века. Самый ранний вариант выглядел следующим образом:
"Jt is ywrite that euery thing Hymself sheweth in the tastyng".

Уже в более привычном нам виде All the proofe of a pudding, is in the eating пословица появилась в сочинении английского историка Уильяма Кемдена в 1605 году.

Создание современного варианта пословицы приписывают Питеру Энтони Мотте, английскому писателю, драматургу и переводчику французского происхождения. В 1701 году Мотте перевел пословицу, которую Сервантес использовал в своем знаменитом романе о Дон Кихоте. На испанском пословица звучала al freír de los huevos lo verá, что буквально означает you will see it when you fry the eggs.

Помимо полной версии пословицы существует и ее краткий вариант the proof is in the pudding, который впервые был напечатан в журнале British Farmer's Magazine. Он приобрел особую популярность в Соединенных Штатах в 50-х годах 20 века.

В последнее время сокращенная версия становится все более распространенной несмотря на то, что в ней отсутствует суть оригинальной пословицы.
