Прилагательное whimsical было образовано от существительного whim-wham. Это существительное появилось в английском языке в начале 16 века и первоначально означало «декоративный предмет или безделушку» (ornamental object or trinket). С течением времени whim-wham приобрело новое значение – «фантастическая идея или странная фантазия».

История происхождения существительного whim-wham неизвестна. Но интересным является тот факт, что это слово по форме и звучанию похоже на существительное flimflam, которое первоначально имело аналогичное значение – «странная или бессмысленная идея или сказка», а сейчас означает «вздор, ерунда, мошенничество» (talk that is confusing and intended to deceive; definition – Cambridge Dictionary).
