История происхождения идиомы think outside the box

Происхождение фразы до конца неясно. Метафоры, которые призывают мыслить нестандартно или с меньшими ограничениями, имеют давнюю историю. Например, в «Ежегодном реестре» – сборнике описаний важнейших событий в истории, политике и литературе, издаваемом в Британии, начиная с 1758 года, в выпуске за 1888 год была зафиксирована фраза think outside the lines.

Примерно с 1954 года в качестве метафоры нестандартного мышления стала использоваться головоломка nine dots puzzle. Nine dots puzzle – математическая головоломка, задача которой состоит в том, чтобы соединить девять точек, расположенных под прямым углом, с помощью ручки четырьмя прямыми линиями, не поднимая ручку.

В связи с этим в английском языке появились фразы go outside the dots, breakthrough thinking that gets outside the nine-dot square, step outside the box.

В начале 1970-х фразу think outside the dots стали использовать без упоминания головоломки, а в 1976 в Англии и в 1978 в США была использована привычная нам сегодня версия – think outside the box.
