Словари английского языка продолжают подводить итоги года. Вслед за Oxford English Dictionary, который назвал словом 2021 года разговорную форму vax, Cambridge Dictionary объявил слово года. Им стало существительное perseverance.

Словарь определяет perseverance как «продолжительные усилия для достижения чего-либо, даже если это сопряжено с трудностями и занимает много времени».

Perseverance – слово, которое практически всегда употребляется в положительном значении и выражает восхищение говорящего к тем, кто проявляет упорство и не сдается в трудных ситуациях.

Существительное perseverance появилось в английском языке в 14 веке.

Современное английское существительное perseverance образовано от среднеанглийского perseveraunce, которое произошло от французского parseverance, которое в свою очередь является заимствованием из латинского и происходит от persevērantia.

Согласно статистике, собранной редакцией Cambridge Dictionary, пользователи по всему миру составили 243 тысячи поисковых запросов слова perseverance. 30487 из этих запросов пришлось на период с 18 по 24 февраля, после того как марсоход НАСА под названием Perseverance приземлился на Марсе.
