Большинство из нас знает, что слово pedestrian – это существительное, которое означает «пешеход», то есть «человек, передвигающийся пешком».

Но интересным является тот факт, что сначала, а именно в 1716 году, в английском языке появилось прилагательное pedestrian, которое означало «скучный, прозаический» и использовалось для описания текстов. Образовано это прилагательное было от латинского слова pedester (пеший), которое в свою очередь произошло от существительного ped (нога).

Можно удивиться, как прилагательное, описывающее способ передвижения, связано со стилем письма. Дело в том, что pedestrian употреблялось в качестве противопоставления equestrian (конный, всадник, наездник). Возможно, из-за того, что ходьба – это менее захватывающий процесс, чем верховая езда, слово pedestrian стало синонимом скучного или лишенного воображения.

В 1791 году прилагательное pedestrian стало употребляться в английском языке в своем буквальном значении – going on foot.

Начиная с 1793 слово pedestrian стало использоваться в качестве существительного.

Anyway, I find our country’s New Year traditions rather pedestrian. More interesting are certain customs popular south of our border or across the big pond.
