Фразеологизм not my cup of tea появился в Британии в начале 20 века. Интересно, что изначально фраза использовалась без отрицательной частицы и имела положительное значение. Идиома cup of tea вошла в обиход, чтобы описать что-то, что человек ценил, что было ему дорого или очень нравилось. Фразу использовали, когда речь шла о близком друге.

Английский художник и писатель Уильям де Морган на страницах своего произведения Somehow good дает объяснение идиоме cup of tea.

"He may be a bit hot-tempered and impulsive... otherwise, it's simply impossible to help liking him." To which Sally replied, borrowing an expression from Ann the housemaid, that Fenwick was a cup of tea. It was metaphorical and descriptive of invigoration.
