Стоит сразу оговориться, в английском языке нет прилагательного chalant. Nonchalant образовано от старофранцузского слова nonchaloir, которое означает «игнорировать, относиться с пренебрежением». Само слово nonchaloir состоит из отрицательной приставки non- и + chaloir (заботиться, беспокоиться). В свою очередь chaloir произошло от латинского calēre (be warm).

Впервые прилагательное nonchalant появилось в английском языке в 1734 году.
