Фраза know/learn the ropes появилась в английском языке в первой половине 19 века. С большой долей вероятности можно сказать, что идиома связана с мореплаванием и навигацией. Парусные суда имеют сложные системы мачт и парусов, которые контролируются канатами. Для того чтобы уверенно себя чувствовать на корабле, моряку необходимо выучить все назначение всех этих канатов и научиться ими управлять.

Один из первых примеров употребления идиомы know/learn the ropes можно найти в мемуарах писателя Ричарда Генри Дана “Two years before the mast”, опубликованных в 1840 году:
