January, январь, – первый месяц года в юлианском и григорианском календарях. Один из семи месяцев продолжительностью в 31 день. По средним температурам январь является самым холодным месяцем года в Северном полушарии и самым теплым – в Южном полушарии Земли.

Среди множества богов, которым поклонялись древние римляне, был бог по имени Янус. Считалось, что у него два лица: одно смотрит вперед, а другое назад. Янус ассоциировался с дверями, вратами и всеми началами. Поэтому, когда в 713 году до н. э. римляне изменили свой календарь и добавили к началу года два месяца, первый из них был назван Ianuarius (буквально «дверь в год») в честь Януса.
