Hunt-and-peck – a method of typing in which one looks at the keyboard and types using usually the index fingers.

Первый патент на пишущую машинку был выдан английской королевой Анной изобретателю Генри Миллю еще в 1714 году. Изобретатель патентовал не только устройство, но и способ последовательной печати букв на бумаге. Вот, что писал патентный совет в своем отчете:

Our Trusty and welbeloved Henry Mill, gent., hath by his petition humbly represented vnto us, That he hath by his great study and paines & expence invented and brought to perfection an artificial machine or method for impressing or transcribing of letters, one after another, as in writing, whereby all writing whatsoever may be engrossed in paper or parchment so neat and exact as not to be distinguished from print.

Первые печатные машинки были тяжелыми и неудобными и подходили лишь для одного способа набора текста – hunt-and-peck, когда каждую букву приходилось разыскивать и с силой ударять по ней указательным пальцем. Однако само существительное hunt-and-peck появилось почти через 200 лет после изобретения машинки, в начале 20 века.
