Итак, почему же кит стал использоваться в английском языке для усиления. Лексикографы связывают это с размерами млекопитающего, которое является самым большим животным на земле. 

Но в начале 19 века, когда идиома только появилась, в ней фигурировал не кит (whale), а однокоренное с ним слово whaler – китобойное судно.
