Происхождение термина fad

Согласно этимологическому словарю, существительное fad появилось в английском языке в 1834 году.

История происхождения существительного fad неизвестна, поэтому существует несколько версий его происхождения.

Одна из них связана с тем, что слово состоит всего лишь из трех букв, поэтому высказываются предположение, что fad – это аббревиатура от «For A Day». Эта версия могла бы быть вполне убедительной. Однако, когда это слово только появилось в 19 веке, оно имело другое значение и использовалось по отношению к особенным действиям, которые выполняли согласно обычаю, а не из-за какого-то преходящего увлечения.

По другой версии fad – это сокращение от существительного fiddle-faddle, которое означает «бессмыслица» или «глупость».
