Word story – evergreen

Word story – evergreen

Evergreen (noun) – a plant that retains green leaves throughout the year.
Evergreen (adjective) – relating to or denoting a plant that retains green leaves throughout the year.
Definition – Oxford Dictionary

Существительное evergreen появилось позже в 1658 году, когда английский писатель, садовод и мемуарист, коллекционер Джон Ивлин, переводя работу французского автора Nicolas de Bonnefons, дал ей название ‘A Treatise of Flowers, and Ever-greens‘.

Слово evergreen образовано способом словосложения: ever, в значении “always”, + прилагательное “green”. Прямое значение слова evergreen указывает на факт, что листва этих растений не меняет цвет и не опадает осенью. Кроме значения "вечнозеленый" прилагательное evergreen, имеет второе, переносное значение – неувядающий.

Существительное evergreen также имеет два значения:
1. вечнозеленое растение;
2. постоянная популярность, непреходящий успех.
