История происхождения слова ditto

Прилагательное ditto пришло в английский язык из итальянского в начале 17 века. В свою очередь итальянцы образовали ditto/detto от латинского dicere, которое означает «говорить».

Но англичане пошли дальше итальянцев и, посчитав слово функциональным, в том же 17 веке стали использовать его как существительное, а в 20-х годах 18 века – как наречие и глагол.

Изначально существительное ditto использовалось главным образом в текстах, лишенных какой-либо художественной привлекательности: различного рода описях, счетах-фактурах, а также сухих научных работах. Например, Эдвард Донован, англо-ирландский зоолог, писатель и путешественник, основатель Музея и Института естественной истории в Лондоне, использовал ditto для подписи к иллюстрациям в своей работе The Natural History of British Insects (1795). Подпись под первой иллюстрацией – "the natural size of the larva, with its manner of feeding," а под второй – "magnified appearance of the upperside of ditto."

В конце 19 века появился ditto marks, «знак повтора» (″) – символ, представляющий собой двойной штрих, указывающий, что слово, цифра или символ, обозначенные над ним, будут повторяться.

В 20-х годах 20 века появилась аппарат Ditto Machine, который работал как дубликатор.
В таком аппарате все, что требовалось скопировать, прижималось непосредственно к мастер-листу с прикрепленной к нему копировальной бумагой. После удаления копировальной бумаги, на обратной стороне мастер-листа оставались метки. Затем мастер-лист пропускали через машину, где он увлажнялся спиртосодержащей жидкостью, метки с мастер-листа переносились на новый лист бумаги и получалась копия с исходника. Такие машины были настолько распространены, что у глагола ditto даже появилось новое значение «копировать (что-то, например, печатные материалы) на копировальный аппарат». Ditto Machines пользовались особенной популярностью у студентов и научных работников, но с появлением фотокопировальных аппаратов необходимость в них исчезла.

Если в начале 20 века термин ditto чаще всего использовался как глагол, то сейчас наиболее частотным является наречие.
