Фраза break the ice первоначально означала 'to forge a path for others to follow’ (прокладывать путь для других).

"To be the first to break the Ice of the Enterprize."

Вместе с появлением ледоколов в английский язык придет и существительное icebreaker, которое в дополнение к прямому значению приобретет и переносное значение – действие, направленное на то, чтобы снять напряжение и разрядить обстановку, особенно в ситуации, когда встречаются незнакомые или малознакомые люди (something that you say or do to make people feel more relaxed at a party or other social event; definition – Macmillan Dictionary).

They closed up the inundation with a few words - having used it, evidently, as a mere ice-breaker and acquaintanceship-breeder - then they dropped into business.
Mark Twain, Life on Mississippi, 1883
