Word Story – Al Fresco

Word Story – Al Fresco

Al fresco adjective – (especially of food and eating) outside, in the fresh air.

an al fresco breakfast
an al fresco café

Al fresco adverb – (especially of food and eating) outside, in the fresh air dining al fresco.
In our country restaurant, meals can be served al fresco.

Al fresco – на природе, на открытом воздухе

Существует два варианта написания слова – слитно (Macmillan Dictionary, Merriam-Webster) и раздельно (Wiktionary, Cambridge Dictionary, Oxford Dictionary).

Слово, а вернее фраза, al fresco пришла в английский язык из итальянского и буквально означает ‘in a cool air’. Но, что особенно интересно, итальянцы никогда не употребляют эту фразу относительно завтрака, обеда или ужина на природе. Для этого у них есть два выражения 'fuori' или 'all'aperto'. А фраза al fresco употребляется как сленговое выражение ‘in jail’ по отношении к преступникам.

So, how about a breakfast al fresco?
