University Curriculum in the UK

University Curriculum in the UK

University courses in the UK, especially in humanities, including art and design are largely self-directed, and students have freedom in chosing their subject areas depending on their personal interests.

Every student must complete a set amount of «units» (modules) and gain a certain amount of «credits» a year to pass, usually 120 a year in for full time BA.

Each course is worth a certain number of credit points determined by different criteria including student’s workload, learning outcomes and contact hours. The more work and effort (often in hours) a student is required to put into a course, the more credits that course is worth.

Students will be assessed on an ongoing basis during each unit, which will then result in the final mark. (I will try to explain the assessment system in the next article).

My course –BA (Hons) Fine Art – is largely practice based, so the main unit that we have is called «Studio Practice», which is working in the studio, guided by your personal tutor.

Another unit is theoretical course – «Contextualising Practice» in the form of lectures and seminars once a week, looking at art history and current debate.

The third major unit 'Unit X' is also practical, and helps us understand how Fine Art works as a professional artist beyond the university. For this unit and depending on your own interest students arrange thier own exhibitions outside campus, collaborate on various projects with outside galleries, libraries, design studios, and get involed with teaching.

My schedule this year (I’m in my final 3d year) consists mostly of my studio practice, which involves predominantly painting, a couple of lectures and/or artist talks a week along with group and individual tutorials with my tutor. This style of education requires determination, passion for the subject and alot of self-motivation, but also allows me to work at my own pace, make work outside the studio if required, and get a part time job to support my studies.

This is the more detailed description of my course, where you can see the divison into Units and read more about programme specifications and learning outcomes www.art.mmu.ac.uk
